Lest We Forget

This isn't a particularly attractive or interesting sign. It's very worn and tired looking. It's a little unusual I suppose with the rabbits.
I took it because it's unlikely to be around much longer. The Warren House at Bengeo has been closed for several weeks and it looks unlikely to re-open.

Just another pub closure - use them before you lose them.

Modern Signs

When you read other books and blogs about pub signs, there's a general perception that modern signs are all terrible. In general I'd have to agree with that, although there are exceptions.

This sign is around 18 months old and comes from the recently refurbished Bull's Head in Turnford Hertfordshire. Not to everyone's taste, but I like it - the Bull is also in 3D which is unusual.

I have so far featured pub signs from my locality but shall spread my wings shortly.

A Classic Pub Name

The Coach and Horses in Newgate Street Village, Hertfordshire. I would have liked to have got a little closer with the camera here but I would have been in a busy pub car park so I thought it best not to risk it!

Save our Pub Signs

The question of disappearing pub signs might admittedly not be the subject on everybody's lips at the moment but there are a growing number of individuals fighting for their preservation.

The pub sign is as much a part of our heritage as any building and the daily closure of pubs is having a direct impact on that. In addition, our beautiful hand painted signs are being replaced by joyless corporate logos so those of us who feel strongly about this are at risk from a two-pronged attack.

Over the coming weeks and months we will look into this in more depth while sharing some of my favourite, and no so favourite signs!

So for now, please enjoy my first offering: This sign is from the Brocket Arms in historical Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire. Since I took this, the pub has been refurbished so I need to get down there soon to make sure it's still there.

I shall report back on that and bring you more next week.
